Chimney crowns
A chimney crown covers the top of the chimney and is typically made from concrete. A proper crown should have an overhang of at least 2 inches to protect the chimney from rain and snow. Cracks should be repaired promptly in order to avoid damage to the inside of the chimney.
Chimney caps
A chimney cap covers just the flue. Caps prevent water and animals from entering the chimney. They also prevent burning embers from exiting the flue and causing a fire.
Chase covers
Chimney chase covers are similar to chimney crowns but metal. Chase covers are most often found on prefabricated or factory-built chimneys.
Flue caps
Flue caps cover only the flue of the appliance, such as boilers, water heaters, and furnaces. They prevent water and animals from entering the flue.
Top-sealing damper
A top-sealing damper, such as the Chim-a-lator brand, mounts on top of a clay flue tile and seals the flue from the top. It is operated by a cable that runs down the chimney and attaches to a handle in the firebox.
